The VMware Question Has Changed

4th November 2026

Here’s how we answered it, and why we’re now bringing that answer to our customers.

– By Edward O’Connor, Chief Technology Officer, Continent 8 Technologies

The cost of staying put keeps rising.

For the last 15 years, VMware was the default answer to “what do we run our infrastructure on?” Since Broadcom took over, that question comes up in almost every customer conversation we have. VMware licensing has moved to subscriptions, core prices have increased, and products have been bundled together, so the cost of staying put keeps rising.

At Continent 8 we started on this earlier than most. We first deployed Nutanix in 2016, and in 2023 AHV became our standard hypervisor, for our business and for our customers. We’ve been supporting large-scale customer migrations since. Here’s why:

Why Nutanix

A Platform, Not a Stack of Products

Compute, storage and networking run on one software-defined platform. You don’t need a separate SAN or a separate storage licence.

Simple to Operate

Manage all of your environments from one simple, intuitive console or through code. It’s your choice. Day-2 operations have never been this easy.

Secure as Standard

Encryption for data stored and in transit, micro-segmentation, and automated checks that keep systems compliant.

Reliable Migration Tools

The recent Broadcom VDDK change has no impact on our ability to migrate your VM configuration and data.

Resilient by Design

Data is replicated across cloud clusters. If hardware fails, workloads move automatically and the platform repairs itself. That’s essential for regulated, always-on platforms like the ones our customers run.

Ready for What’s Next

Kubernetes, containers and AI workloads run next to traditional VMs.

Technology alone isn’t the answer. How you consume it matters too.

Our customers don’t run in one place. They run in regulated data centres in many countries, at the edge and in the public cloud, often all at the same time. Our job as a service provider is to make all of that work as one environment, with consistent operations, security and compliance wherever each workload needs to be.

That’s why we worked with Nutanix as a development partner on Nutanix Service Provider Central, a new platform built for service providers to deliver multi-tenant cloud solutions. It’s built on the same Nutanix platform we’ve run since 2016. We’re the first service provider to bring it into production, and customers are migrating at pace.

For our customers, that means:

  • Pure consumption: pay for what you use, with flexible capacity commitments
  • Scale on demand, without waiting for hardware
  • Self-service and API-driven provisioning
  • A consistent platform across our global footprint and the public cloud
  • Data sovereignty and regulatory compliance included from the start

If rising VMware costs, licensing changes or operational complexity are prompting a review of your infrastructure strategy, now is the time to explore the alternatives. Contact your Continent 8 account manager to discuss your migration options and discover how organisations are reducing costs, simplifying operations and gaining greater flexibility through a modern cloud platform.

With experience migrating more than 10,000 VMs across over 100 customer environments, Continent 8 can help you assess your options, minimise migration risk and build a roadmap aligned to your technical, operational and business objectives.

Let's work together.
